Postpartum Herbal Sitz Bath

Everyone talks about what to expect during pregnancy, but where’s the support for postpartum moms and their sensitive lady parts? Just because baby’s here doesn’t mean your body (or skin) instantly bounces back. Thankfully new Mamas have a whole range of products -- from nipple creams to postpartum tummy butters and sitz baths after childbirth -- that helps you feel like you.

For Mamas who delivered vaginally, a sitz bath after birth can be exactly what the doctor ordered. It’s estimated new moms require six weeks of recovery time; however, it may take you longer to heal from the swelling, episiotomy stitches, perineal bruising and hemorrhoids. To expedite recovery, look for a postpartum sitz bath made with 100% organic herbs like shepherd’s purse, yarrow and goldenseal that decrease bleeding and swelling. Then add calendula, chickweed and plantain to soothe and add styptic and antibacterial benefits.

Brew your herbs in a shallow, lukewarm bath and soak your achy bits for 20 minutes. Alternatively, use a specialty sitz bath bowl that fits over your toilet. If you prefer a cooling compress, fill herbs in a muslin bath and place directly over your perineum area. Repeat up to three times a day for at least the first week, and continue until your hooha is singing, “Hallelujah!”
