Happy World Breastfeeding Week 2019!

If you’re like most moms juggling a million and a half things a day, you’ve probably been too busy to notice that World Breastfeeding Week is upon us. (Congrats, by the way, to even have time to visit our little ol’ blog!) This seven-day event takes place annually beginning August 1, and is celebrated in more than 170 countries around the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the event began in 1990 to commemorate the Innocenti Declaration made by WHO and UNICEF policy-makers to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. In honor of World Breastfeeding Week (and ultimately, moms around the globe!), The Spoiled Mama Blog is bringing you fun breastfeeding news and factoids over the next few days. First up? Let’s see how breastfeeding-related news has made headlines:

The Breast Milk Baby doll

1) We’ve all played with dolls as little ones, but this isn’t our inanimate playmate of yesteryear. The new Breast Milk Baby emulates a crying, suckling baby that is activated by strategically placed flower appliques on an apron worn by mommy. The controversy, of course, is that “mommy” is your seven-year-old daughter. Critics of the doll say that it encourages young girls to grow up too soon, while supporters say the doll simply reenacts a natural occurrence. The doll, created in Spain, has been a hit throughout Europe and premieres to the American market shortly. To see the Breast Milk Baby in action, and why it is creating such a stir, check out the ABC News video found here.

2) Have you ever been in public and felt there wasn't an acceptable place to breastfeed your babe? This project called The Milk Truck is hoping to provide mommies with a safe, comfortable and clean space to nurse throughout Pittsburgh. This mobile service originally was looking for $10K to start their efforts, and will come to your location (with an awfully discreet boob atop their truck) and allow you to breastfeed in the back of their vehicle. You can learn more about The Milk Truck on their Website. But for your convenience, here’s a couple highlights from their frequently asked questions:

Q: Are you concerned that you may offend people with that obnoxious boob on the top of the truck?

A: I’m concerned that we offend hungry babies every day by not letting them eat when they need to.

Q: Are you a bunch of angry moms looking for vengeance?

A: Yes. And you know the saying: vengeance is best served in public with a giant boob on top. Come on!

3) As part of World Breastfeeding Week, an event known as the Big Latch On will take place on Friday, Saturday & Saturday, when thousands of moms across the U.S. and beyond will nurse their babies at 10:30 a.m. According to the Big Latch On Website, the goal of this event is to educate the public about breastfeeding and to hopefully break the current world record for the most moms breastfeeding at one time. To find the nearest registered location in your area, go here.

Additionally, The Spoiled Mama wants to support all the nursing moms out there with a 10% discount on our Fix That Sucker Nipple Butter for sore, cracked nipples. Enter cde: LATCHON2019.

*This sale will be valid until Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
